Calendula for Tea (calendula officinalis)

Calendula Flower for Teas

Calendula for Tea (calendula officinalis)

Calendula flower is really pretty, it has a bright yellow / orange colour and is attractive to bees and birds in the garden. A very easy plant to grow and can brighten up any garden. Calendula has been used for cooking, teas and wellness for many centuries.

The Romans grew calendula for it's medicinal qualities. It is one of the oldest cultivated flowers. It belongs to the Asteraceae family and is commonly called pot marigold. It may have gained this name in Tudor times when it was a popular ingredient in stews, soups and pot based cooking.

Calendula Flower for Tea The Tea Cartel

Calendula derives from the Latin name kalendae, meaning day of the new moon or start of the new month. It was believed this flower would be the first flower of every 'calendar' month.  Do not confuse calendula with French or African marigolds. They are both part of the same Asteraceae family, but from different species. French and African marigolds are often used in the garden as a companion plant to keep pests away, but they are not edible for teas.

Calendula Benefits

Historically calendula is known for it's beneficial healing properties. May provide beneficial anti viral, anti bacterial, and anti inflammatory properties. It contains high levels of vitamin C, making it a good choice to add to tea blends. It has beautiful bright yellow/orange petals. Gargling cold calendula tea may help with soothing sore throats.

Preparation of Calendula Teas

We utilise calendula as an ingredient in several of our tea blends. The list is below at the next point. Calendula is a soft and fragile petal. It will be prepared the same with other teas, steeped in hot water for 3-4 minutes, strained and enjoyed.

The calendula plant is so beautiful, it's a great plant to grow at home. Each time you see a bloom it will make you smile and feel happy. A tincture is made from the petals and these can also be used in salads, rice dishes, stir-fries, stews, biscuits and desserts.
