Growing Ginger at Home
Ginger is an ancient plant that was introduced to the New World more than a thousand years ago from Asia. It was grown for it's rhizome, or swollen underground stem which is why it's often called stem ginger.Ā
Ginger belongs to the Zingiberaceae family, which includes cardamon and tumeric. You can grow ginger at home with care and ease.
Ginger needs good quality soil, sandy soil works well as it's free draining. Buy the ginger rhizome and plant it beneath the surface with the little 'eyes' pointing upwards. Your plant will need regular feeding using natural ingredients such as seaweed liquid nutrients and good quality soil.Ā
Typically ginger is harvested in winter, however side shoots can be taken earlier. It is easy to grow and a beautiful plant to have in your garden.
